About
Artist Statement
Contemplative Realism
Living in the rural woods of Oregon, my surroundings shape both my life and my art. The extremes in weather, the warmth of the fire that heats our home, and the ever-changing light all offer images rich in symbolism and meaning.
I took my first art class as a 32 year-old mother of three, with no formal background in art. I wanted to take all of this complexity of goodness and brokenness in my life and respond with beauty. I fell in love with the technicality of classical realism and its power to communicate through composition.
My goal in each painting is to use the skills passed down from generations of classical artists and utilize composition to draw the viewer into a powerful narrative. I work in layers, building depth and emotion, allowing each piece to become its own story. I am most inspired by stories of grief and loss which are tempered by deep hope and resilience.
I want collectors to see my work as a way to pause, reflect, and connect with their own stories of life and loss. My paintings are an invitation to find beauty in the growth and grief we often overlook, much like a seed finally breaking the surface and reaching for the light.
